Gambling Advertising Reduction Could Lead To Millions Lost In Ma.
While lawmakers in Massachusetts are discussing the possibility of expanding their gambling options to include casinos, they also are dealing with a declining lottery revenue stream. That, according to some, is a result of less money being spent on advertising.
Governor Duval Patrick is attempting to defend himself against former Democratic ally Timothy Cahill. The latter left the Democratic party to run against Patrick for governor, and he has asserted that the governor does not properly handle state finances.
One of the main issues is a $8 million reduction in the amount of money that is spent on advertising for the state lottery. Cahill believes the reduction could be the reason for a projected $222 million in revenue losses.
Patrick refuses to acknowledge that the reduction is the cause for that type of revenue decrease. he believes this is just the latest excuse for poor revenue, and he is demanding answers from Lottery officials.
"...The legislative leadership are losing our patience with the excuses with the Lottery performance," said Patrick, "Just give us a realistic estimate so we can build that into the budget, and not have to do patches and plugs to cope."
In the midst of the lawmakers squabble, they are still attempting to expand casino gambling into Massachusetts. Patrick has been a strong supporter of casino resorts, running his campaign largely on the issue.
The governor now has allies in top legislative positions. House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray are both in favor of casino expansion. The two leaders have been lobbying fellow lawmakers to make the legal changes necessary to bring casinos to the state.
