Senate President David Williams had a way for all parties involved to solve the gambling expansion question in Kentucky. The senator wanted the people of Kentucky to have the final say on the expansion.
This week, his proposal, however, was defeated in his own chamber. Democrats in the Senate blocked a Bill that called for any changes in gambling law to be put to a vote in the state. The Bill is now dead and will not go to the House for a vote.
Many Democratic leaders in Kentucky are in favor of slot expansion at state racetracks. The tracks are struggling financially and lawmakers believe that slot gambling at the track would help the industry and help the state budget at the same time.
Republicans in the state have been slow to warm to the idea. Williams came up with his Bill as a means to ensure that Democrats could not push gambling laws through, but the Senate decided that would not be the course of action taken.
The House has previously passed a gambling expansion Bill, but the Senate closed the door on that legislation. Several different plans have been circulating around in Kentucky, but there still has not yet been a plan that is acceptable to both the House and the Senate.
Governor Steve Beshear and House Speaker Greg Stumbo are both in favor of slots at the racetracks. Beshear started a national gambling controversy last year when he attempted, unsuccessfully, to seize the domain names of 141 online gambling site.
