Gambling Bills The Subject Of Lawmaker Meetings In Maine
Lawmakers in the state of Maine are convening today to try and work out the details of several different gambling Bills that have been proposed. The proposals range from slot machines at tracks to non-profit gaming without licenses.
The Legislature's Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee today will take up these issues. One Bill calls for nonprofit organizations to be allowed to offer games of chance at their fundraisers without having to obtain a license.
Another Bill is an attempt to revive a Bill that has already been turned down by Maine voters. The plan calls for a casino to be built in which forty percent of the revenue would go to the state. The original plan called for the casino to be built in Oxford.
The Passamaquoddy Tribe has an interest in today's proceedings as well. One of the Bills would allow the tribe to operate up to 100 slot machines on its Washington County reservation. Oxford County is also the location of a proposal to allow slot machines at both a commercial and tribal track in the county.
Gambling expansion has been a hot topic all across the US this legislative session. Many states are turning to casino gambling to try and solve budget deficits. Due to the economy, the unemployment rate is skyrocketing, which is another area state lawmakers are tacking with the expanded casino gambling.
