The state of New York is in an economic bind similar to the one that is hurting the entire country. State after state have been exploring expanding their gambling options and New York appears ready to get in on the act.

Governor Patterson's administration and lawmakers are considering expanding the hours at the state's video lottery gaming facilities. They also are contemplating adding electronic table games such as blackjack and roulette.

The move to electronic games would happen much more quickly than if the state tried to add casinos. For casinos, constitutional amendments are needed, but not with the electronic games.

"With the state having a tough fiscal situation, they may be looking for revenue enhancements. This may be an easy way to go without a constitutional amendment," said Senator John Bonacic.

Governor Patterson is trying to trim $2 billion from the current budget. He is meeting with lawmakers on Tuesday in Albany to try and slim the budget deficit.

The Legislature is being pushed by several facilities to approve the expanded hours of operation. Louis Cappelli, believes that the Monticello Raceway could bring the state up to $500 million in revenue from the expanded hours.
