Gambling Debate Could Heat Up In Massachusetts This Week

Governor Duval Patrick has been pushing for expanded gambling in Massachusetts since he took office. House Speaker Robert DeLeo announced last week that he will soon be unveiling his proposal for gambling expansion, which should make Patrick happy.

Instead, a debate is expected when DeLeo files his legislative proposal. DeLeo is calling for slot machines at state racetracks, but Patrick would like to see gambling expanded on a much bigger plane.

When Patrick ran for governor, he used a platform heavy on casino resorts. Voters bought into the idea, and elected Patrick to lead them. Now, after several failed attempts, Patrick is still trying to convince lawmakers that casino resorts would be beneficial to Massachusetts.

DeLeo has, however, been more of an ally in the gambling expansion issue than previous Speaker Salvatore DiMasi. While DeLeo wants to stay away from casino resorts, he still believes that gambling revenue is needed in the state. DiMasi was leading the charge to keep any type of gambling out of the state.

Senate President Therese Murray is the wild card in the debate. Murray sides a little closer with Patrick, but could sway the Senate to approve the plan that DeLeo will soon unveil. Murray would like to see casino resorts, feeling that revenue and job creation could help Massachusetts through tough economic times.

DeLeo did not announce the exact date that his legislation would be coming, but did say it would be in the next couple of weeks. Many believe that this week would be an opportune time to propose the bill, in order for lawmakers to have enough time to discuss it before the end of the legislative session.
