Gambling Fundraising Divides Calgary Schools

Voted Top Online Casino Several Years in a Row!

As Calgary Catholic schools defy an order from Bishop Fred Henry this week to abolish gambling-based fundraising, Lethbridge schools vow they will continue to follow his controversial edict.

"We have practised, in dealing with the issue of fundraising, so that what we do addresses the bishop's current position on receiving gambling funds within schools," said David Keohane, superintendent of the Holy Spirit Catholic School District, which encompasses Lethbridge and the surrounding rural area.

"We support Bishop Henry's position entirely."

Lethbridge is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary led by Henry, covering the province from Lacombe south to the Canada-U.S. border.

Henry's position, Keohane said, reflects that taken in a position paper called The False Eden of Gambling, backed by Alberta's bishops as a group.

"There is a source document for all this," Keohane said. "Each bishop in the province is concerned about this matter. It's just that each bishop is going to look at addressing the spirit of that document differently."
