Gambling License Stripped From Eagles Club
An 18 month investigation by Maine State Police culminated on Monday with a $60,000 fine and the stripping of a gambling license of The Portland Eagles Club.
The club pleaded guilty to operating illegal video poker machines, and as well as the fine, three video machines and $23,353 in cash were forfeited as result of a January raid in which police executed a search warrant.
Apparently the club was warned to stop the illegal gambling after several other Eagles Clubs in Saco, Waterboro, Biddeford, and Arundel were investigated five years ago and dozens of club officials were convicted and fined up to $6000.
The investigation of these other clubs prompted trustees to inform the Portland Club to stop using their gambling machines and put them away until,"the heat cooled down." The club did not adhere the warnings and paid the price.
Stephanie Andrews, the District Attorney had these words, "What they did was the equivalent of flaunting their disregard for the law, we wanted to send an immediate and strong message that this type of illegal activity by an organization purporting to be a charitable one will not be tolerated in Cumberland County."
