Georgia May Give Individual Counties The Right To Legalize Gambling
The state of Georgia in the past few years has fallen way behind other states when it comes to changing their gambling laws. Many state Republicans are still against changing any laws, even in a time when most other states are doing so.
Then there is Democratic Representative Roger Bruce. He indicated on Friday that he is preparing to offer a Bill that would put the rights to change casino gambling laws in the hands of individual counties of Georgia.
"What I'm talking about doing is creating full scale casinos or horse racing if they (individual counties) want them," said Bruce. He knows how long it will take to convince all necessary legislators to change the laws, so he has instead proposed putting the choice in the hands of the people.
The Legislature in Georgia has always been strongly opposed to changing gambling laws. They have not even had many proposals offered up because of the lack of support gambling has had in the past.
This year is different, however. The recession is causing many states, not just Georgia, to examine the high revenue that could be created by bringing in casino gambling.
Just this week a report surfaced of how Underground Atlanta is trying to lobby to bring video gambling to a struggling downtown area. People in the state of Georgia are starting to take notice of how casinos have been a savior financially in other states.
Even though the Bruce proposal will be tough to get through legislators, it will serve an important purpose of starting the wheel turning towards future discussions about casino gambling in the state.
