In recent months, raids have taken place in Florida, North Carolina, and Texas including illegal gambling machines. Now, Georgia can add their name to that list after officials raided eight establishments on Friday afternoon.

At high noon the clock struck twelve and for eight locations in Harris County, Georgia, that meant their luck had run out. Officials from Muskogee and Harris counties, along with the METRO Narcotics Task Force, carried out raids of gas stations and pool halls.

The raids stem from complaints coming from concerned citizens that saw gambling machines being played at these establishments. The citizens claim that when they went in to get gas or to shop, they saw people playing the machines and getting paid out in cash for their winnings.

In Georgia, the laws regarding gambling machines are similar to those in other states. The games can be played, but the operators of the machines cannot pay out their customers in cash. In some states, no rewards at all can be given for winners, but in other states, non-monetary gifts can be won on the machines.

Sheriff Mike Jolley contends that the raids were part of an effort to send a message within the community that these types of operations would not be tolerated in Harris County. Sheriff Jolley also asserted that there is a widespread problem of these gaming machines in establishments throughout the county.

In recent months, states have cracked down on the illegal gambling machine operations. With these states expanding casino gambling, the authorities want to ensure that revenue is not being drained from the regulated casinos and going to black market casinos.

Gas stations, convenient stores, pool halls, and Internet cafes have been the most common places where these machines have popped up across the East Coast. Out West the machines are not as prevalent with California and Nevada having plenty of casino options for gamblers. The majority of the action on the machines comes from elderly gamblers.
