Golden Casino Falls Victim To Persistent Federal Inquiries
Golden Casino does not allow customers from jurisdictions where it is illegal to gamble online. That is why when undercover agents attempted to set up accounts at the online casino, they were turned away many times.
After many attempts, one agent finally convinced a customer service representative to set the agent up an account. That account has now led to a full investigation in which US law enforcement officials met with players at Golden Casino that resided in the US.
CGW had previously reported about bank account seizures in Maryland, and it now looks as though those seizures were related to the investigation of Golden Casino. Details are still trickling out about the investigation, though it appears as though the law enforcement agencies were persistent in their efforts.
In addition to the agent being allowed to sign up at Golden Casino, the investigation has also led officials to small banks that were told they would not be processing any illegal funds. Each state has varying laws regarding Internet gambling, and Golden Casino had been observant of those laws.
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act has been put in place by the US government back in 2006, but up until now there have been no legal ramifications from the law. The rules have been published for the UIGEA and will go into effect in December.
Representative Barney Frank has introduced legislation that would overturn the UIGEA and set up the framework for regulated online gambling in the US. That proposal, however, is not expected to be discussed by Congress until later in the Fall.
