In New Hampshire, lawmakers have been working feverishly over the past couple of years to expand gambling in the state. Their efforts appear to have finally been rewarded when the Senate passed a bill to add video slots at six locations.
The House will mots likely do the same. A House Committee voted in favor of supporting the bill, and the full House is expected to vote in favor of the gambling expansion. That is likely where the legislation will stall.
Governor john Lynch has announced his plans to veto the legislation. The governor fears that the quality of life will suffer if the video slots are allowed into New Hampshire. It is unknown whether Lynch would support any other forms of gambling expansion in the future.
"If all I cared about was getting through the next couple of years, the decision would be easier," said Lynch, "but I worry what it would mean for New Hampshire over twenty years, thirty years, forty years. I worry that we do not have in place regulatory and legal framework, which other governors tell me is critical before you go forward with expanded gambling."
If Lynch is, indeed, taking advice from other governors, then he probably would be in favor of gambling expansion at some point. Many states have opened their doors to casinos and the millions of dollars in tax revenue that the casinos can provide.
A major source of stress for lawmakers in the US has been the unemployment rate. Thousands of positions have been filled from the casinos that have been opened since the economic recession. Revenue from the casino have gone to general state funds, and in many cases, the states educational systems.
