Governor John Baldacci is against gambling expansion in the state of Maine, and he appears prepared to block any attempt made by lawmakers to pass gambling legislation. Balducci claims he will veto any legislation passed without voter consent.

In Maine, many lawmakers are looking to expand gambling options for the state. The influx of revenue from the gambling would help balance a state budget that was hurt by the economy, but Balducci warns of expanding gambling without Maine residents having a say.

"What you have now in Bankor was voted on by the people of Bankor and was voted on by the people of Maine," said Baldacci, to the Capitol News Service, "The percentages, all of this, was part of a referendum . Any changes to the way that it operates, especially in this particular area, need to be approved by the people."

Oxford County is one of the areas that is looking to expand gambling. Balducci does not want any more gambling outlets, but would be content if voters in Oxford and around Maine had a differing point of view.

Hollywood Slots, the gambling establishment in Bankor, is pushing lawmakers to legalize table games. This comes at a time when other states in the Northeast are moving towards table game expansion. Pennsylvania lawmakers have already signed a new law to allow the games at their casinos.

Casino gambling has been a hot topic in New York, Delaware, and even Atlantic City. New jersey was once the gaming capital of the East Coast, but the casino industry in the state has been ravaged by the economic recession.
