Governor Duval Patrick ran his campaign in the state of Massachusetts on a pro-gambling platform. Now, some people have suggested that the governor is changing his stance on gambling to stay aligned with social progressives in his party.
Patrick composed a Bill that would have brought casino resorts to Massachusetts, but he had little success passing the legislation. Lawmakers' support was short last year, led mainly by former House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi.
Once DiMasi was out as House leader, it appeared that the casino gambling issue was headed towards a positive resolution. Patrick aligned with new House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray. The three were all supporting some form of casino expansion.
For DeLeo, his prime goal was to bring slots to state racetracks. DeLeo has pushed forward with the slot expansion idea, but now Patrick may veto possible legislation that could be created.
"I'm not trying to be a jerk here," said DeLeo, "I'm not trying to be obstreperous, it's just there is harm that is associated with gambling that has to be dealt with, and that's the reason to go about this with extreme care, and that's why I think the setting for this and the limited number of new settings matter."
Patrick, DeLeo, and Murray, will now try to reconcile all of their individual ideas and morph them into one expanded casino gambling plan. To gain an agreement, all sides will have to sway a little from their ideal position on the issue.
