Governor Riley Wins Big Supreme Court Battle Over Video Gambling
The governor of Alabama, Robert Riley, has been attacking video gambling establishments throughout the state with his Task Force on Illegal Gambling. On Friday, Riley received some validation that at least one of the establishments the task force has raided was indeed operating illegal machines.
A preliminary injunction has kept the governor and his task force from raiding the White Hall Resort and Entertainment Center. On Friday, the Alabama Supreme Court dismissed the injunction after agreeing with the governor that the machines White Hall were operating were illegal in the state.
"This ruling from the Supreme Court makes clear all these so-called electronic bingo machines in Alabama are illegal and it's time for them to go," said an ecstatic Riley after the ruling. Riley's claim of victory, however, was far from what the Supreme Court ruled.
The Supreme Court did not make the determination that all bingo-style machines in Alabama were illegal. Instead, they chose to rule that the individual machines that were being used in White Hall were illegal under state law.
The attorneys for White Hall did not agree with Riley's analysis of the Supreme Court ruling, and they claimed that the issue of video gambling machines will be determined throughout the state at a later date. There are several other cases that are still pending in other areas of the state regarding raids that the governor's task force have carried out.
