Grand Rapids Tribe Seeks Federal Recognition for New Casino
A Grand Rapids-based Indian tribe wants the government to speed up the process of deciding whether it deserves federal recognition.
An anti-gambling group is accusing the Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians of angling for a new casino.
Democratic U.S. Senator Carl Levin and tribal chairman Ron Yob say millions of dollars in federal funding are at stake. There's a December deadline for receiving the money, but the normal review process can take a decade or longer.
Opponents of federal recognition for the tribe say the timeline is being driven by gambling interests trying to develop a new casino in Muskegon.
