The gambling issue in Kentucky is so controversial that lawmakers can not even agree on whether gambling is an issue at all. Lexington Mayor Jim Gray claims that he will support gambling expansion for the benefit of horse farms in the state.
The admission came this past week after Gray was sworn is as the city';s new mayor. Gray believes that gambling revenue from the slots at state race tracks could go a long way towards helping the farms survive.
Unfortunately for Gray and the horse farms, House Speaker Greg Stumbo has gone on record saying that the gambling expansion issue will not even be discussed in the new legislative session. The issue did not gain much support in past sessions, and Stumbo is intent on dealing with more pressing issues.
Gray is planning on pushing the issue, despite Stumbo's position. The tracks in Kentucky have been lobbying for slot machines for several years. The decrease in interest in horse racing has caused financial difficulties throughout the racing industry in the US.
In many states, tracks have been turned into racinos, where the racing is aided by casinos at the facility. The casinos have been bringing new customers into the tracks, and it has helped tracks in several areas of the US stay open through the economic recession.
The Lexington mayor has a meeting set at his house with legislators in February. At the meeting, Gray will attempt to sway the lawmakers on the importance of expanding gambling for the sake of the horse farms. To get the issue to the House floor, the legislators will have to be much more receptive than they had been in 2010.
Kentucky is one of the few states in the country that still has not expanded their gaming industries to include casinos. The racing industry has been paramount to the economy in Kentucky, leaving lawmakers to wrestle with the idea of expansion. Old-time lawmakers, however, have kept the expansion from taking place.
