The gambling issue in Alabama turned political many months ago, but now almost every county that has some form of gambling with video machines is getting in on the debate. The latest to step into the ring is Greene County Sheriff Ison Thomas.

The sheriff claims that the machines in operation in his county are regulated. He has deemed them legal under state law, and is intent on adhering to that law. That even means Thomas is prepared to stop any raid attempts by the Task Force.

"No one is above the law," said Thomas, as reported by The Associated Press, "including the Task Force. And should they come to Greene County, I cannot allow them to raid legal businesses."

The Task Force may take exception to Greenetrack, one of the largest electronic bingo operators in Alabama. If a raid is planned and carried out, Thomas will be waiting with open arms for the opportunity to stop the raid, and he will have some other politicians by his side.

"We will stand in the doors and not allow them to do that without a valid search warrant," said Senator Bobby Singleton of Greensboro. Even with the threat of a standoff, the head of the Task Force, John Tyson, is maintaining that the machines at Greenetrack are illegal.

The next couple of weeks will be crucial for the future of gambling in Alabama with several court dates set to determine the validity of the Task Force raids. Also, lawmakers are increasingly looking to give the people of Alabama a say on whether or not the video gambling machines should stay.
