Gubernatorial Candidate Sparks Criticizes Alabama Gambling Raids
The latest politician to come out against the Governor's Task Force on Illegal Gambling in Alabama may be the person that succeeds Governor Riley. Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks, a Democratic candidate for Governor, has called out Riley.
Sparks believes that more harm than good is coming from the raids that have been taking place around the state. He reiterated on Thursday what many politicians had already claimed, that the raids in Alabama are creating the possibility of violence.
The governor, however, has been unwilling to change his strategy. Riley contends that the gambling establishments are operating illegal gambling machines, and that he will continue his efforts to rid the state of illegal gambling.
In recent weeks, tension has been growing in the state. Thousands of Alabamians have been out of work since two of the major entertainment destinations in the state have closed for fear of a raid. Country Crossings and VictoryLand are both hoping to re-open in the near future.
The gambling issue that has arose since the Task Force has been created may be solved in legislature. Lawmakers have proposed a Bill that would call for voters in Alabama to decide whether or not they want legalized and regulated bingo machine gambling.
Sparks has been a proponent of a regulated gambling system in Alabama. His stance on the issue could help him win the office that Riley currently holds. According to several polls, Riley's approval rating has plummeted since he started the Task Force early last year.
