Health Care Reform Will Not Receive Online Gambling Revenue

Senator Ron Wyden proposed an amendment that would have offset the cost of health care reform in the US. The amendment called for online gambling revenue to go towards the health care costs. Late this week, however, Wyden withdrew his amendment.

"The last thing Senator Wyden wants to do is make it more difficult to expand subsidies for working families by introducing a new contentious issue to the debate," said Jennifer Hoelzer, Communications Director for Wyden.

The move to withdraw the amendment comes after it received criticism from Senator Harry Reid. The senator from Nevada has been protecting the interests of the casino gambling industry in his state by opposing any changes to the current US laws regarding Internet gambling.

Representative Barney Frank has proposed a Bill that would begin the process of regulating the online gambling industry. The US is falling behind other countries when it comes to appeasing the laws of the European Union. France and Italy have recently began to open up their Internet gambling industry to companies from other countries.

Senator Wyden has not fully given up on the Internet gambling amendment. His representatives have indicated that he will pursue the issue at a later date that is more appropriately in timing.

The health care issue has been the hottest debated issue since the Obama Administration took office. The president is pushing for a complete overhaul of the health care system, while many within his own party and Republicans alike would like smaller widescale changes.
