Hearings To Begin Next Week For Frank Online Gambling Legislation
The rules for the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act will go into effect next Tuesday, but they may not be in place long. Representative Barney Frank has proposed online gambling regulation legislation on the table, and lawmakers will begin hearings on the proposal next Thursday, December 3rd.
Frank had introduced two pieces of legislation earlier this year that would change the landscape of Internet gambling in the US. The economic crisis, however, has taken center stage for Frank's House Financial Services Committee, and the online gambling legislation has taken a back seat to the more pressing issues.
Now, however, Frank and other lawmakers in favor of changing online gambling laws in the country, are feeling a sense of urgency. The rules for the UIGEA are set to be published on December 1st, and already lawmakers have sent a letter to the US Department of the Treasury to delay the implementation of those rules.
The hearings will start at the Raburn House Office Building at 10:00 AM. It is not expected that the two pieces of legislation will be marked up at that time. Bill H.R. 2266, the Reasonable Prudence in Regulation Act, would delay the rules of the UIGEA from taking effect.
H.R. 2267, the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, would lay the framework for a regulated online gambling industry in the US. This Bill already has sixty-three co-sponsors.
