House GOP Scuttles Vote on Pa. Property Tax Bill
Momentum toward a vote in the House of Representatives on a bill to distribute $1 billion in gambling-financed tax cuts came crashing down Wednesday night, as Republicans said the plan supported by Gov. Ed Rendell does not go far enough.House Republican leaders say they decided to put off the vote after a day of closed-door debate left them uncertain if it would pass, but more certain that most House members wanted to find ways to deepen the bill?s property tax cuts.
"At this point, the consensus is that there is still time and the will to do more and do better," Sam Smith, the House Republican leader, told reporters after lawmakers flooded the Capitol Rotunda once the decision had been made to delay a vote. House Democrats reacted angrily, saying they suspected the move was designed to hurt Rendell, who is running for re-election after campaigning four years ago on a platform of legalizing and taxing slot-machine gambling to reduce property taxes statewide.
