Illegal Organized Gambling Busts Continue In Rhode Island
This is the time of the year when authorities around the nation round up the illegal gambling operation members that they have been investigating. The latest bust happened in Rhode Island on Tuesday and landed nine people in jail.
When someone thinks of organized crime, Rhode Island is not the first place that comes to mind. On Tuesday morning, however, authorities showed that organized crime takes place in all areas.
The NFL playoffs are nearing, and that means an increase in police activity involving sports gambling. Every year authorities from around the US break up illegal
gambling
operations they have been following throughout the year.
"Typically what happens is that police units send undercover agents to infiltrate the illegal gambling operations. These undercover agents latch on as a gambler, then spend the entire season betting and paying and collecting money from bookies. At the end of the year, they take down the whole operation," said a former police officer from Charlotte who wished not to be identified by name.
The Rhode Island bust comes on the heels of another bust in
Fairfax County, Virginia. The raid in Virginia involved an employee in the Department of Tax Administration office.
