Indiana Lawmakers At Odds Over Gambling Issue In Special Session
The state of Indiana not only has an issue on their hands with gambling expansion, but lawmakers are even at odds over when to discuss the issue. One thing is clear, the Senate does not want the discussions to take place during a special session next month.
"We should not hold the budget hostage over gambling," said Senate President Pro Tem David Long, "Period." That is the stance of most Senators in the state, which leaves the House in a precarious situation.
Gary lawmakers are concerned about the issue because they want one of the two casinos in Gary to be moved, They have stated that they will not vote on any budget issues unless their gambling concerns are explored.
"It is going to be extremely difficult for the budget to be approved in the special session," said observer Henry Trubel, "the two legislative branches are going to have to loosen their stances and do some compromising for anything significant to get done."
One thing where Long has already compromised is a proposal to form a summer study committee to explore the gambling issues. That would give them a head start if the issue did come u[p in the Fall.
