Indiana Taverns Reopen Despite Gambling Investigation
Police in Indiana are allowing 12 of the 23 bars raided last month to reopen. As you recall, law enforcement raided bars in Delaware, Henry, and Madison county last month as part of an investigation into the illegal gambling ring operated by former Teamsters leader, John Neal.
According to Madison County prosecutor Rod Cummings, "Most of the people affected by the shutdown are not the people we are going after, in many ways, they are as much a victim as the people losing their money gambling at these taverns."
One of those night clubs is The Curve Inn in Alexandria. The owner, Beau Alexander, faces 8 felony charges. Alexander, a 43-year-old single mother of 2, and her 12 employees have been unemployed since the September 18th bust.
A judge has allowed 7 of the taverns to reopen and 6 more are expected to open in a few weeks. Those that have reopened include bars in Gaston, Alexandria and Muncie.
Once the taverns reopen, they will be permitted to sell alcohol and will be managed by the same owners that were in control before the raids. Originally, State police had confiscated the alcohol licenses for the taverns in question.
"About 75% of the people layed-off were single mothers. The only thing Rodney Cummings and Madison County succeeded in doing was hurting the working poor", Alexander said.
