Instant Racing Gambling Bill Faces Heavy Opposition In Kentucky
Kentucky lawmakers have been searching for a way to help the state's racing industry. What members of the Senate have come up with is expanded gambling in the form of Instant Racing.
Last week, it appeared as though the legislation to allow Instant Racing was going to sail through a Senate Committee. This week, however, the Bill has stalled after some strong opposition in the Senate.
Anti-gambling forces in Kentucky had joined forces to lobby against the new form of betting. They claim that any expansion of gambling in the state would be bad, although the racetracks have a different opinion.
"Without some help from the government, some Kentucky racetracks are in danger of not being able to compete on a national level like they have in the past," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "In one form or another, additional gambling is needed to help these tracks survive."
Senator Damon Thayer proposed the legislation, but now has backed off of further discussions. He believes the anti-gambling forces are too strong for the Bill to advance.
Thayer did not completely close the door to the idea of the Instant Racing. He claims in the future he may once again pursue the idea, but he also said that it may not happen this legislative session.
