Kentucky lawmakers are continuing to look for ways to help their ailing horse racing industry. For the past couple of months, expanded gambling has been the front and center idea of many of these lawmakers.

On Friday, however, Senator Damon Thayer acknowledged that his latest proposal may now be on life support. The plan, calling for instant racing, has lost some of its earlier supporters this past week.

"I haven't given up yet," said a dejected Thayer, "but I think success is a long shot. Occasionally in horse racing, long shots do come in." Aside from the play on words, not many believe that the instant racing proposal will survive.

Instant racing is an electronic game in which a horse race from the past is run. The outcome, horses names, racetrack, and date of the race are not revealed. That makes it more of a guessing game for gamblers.

Horse records are given on the game, so bettors understand when they are gambling on a long shot and when they are picking the favorite. The proposal, if approved, would have brought millions into the state.

The legislation originally made it out of a Senate Committee, but Senate President David Williams sent it back to the Committee. Upon its arrival back, some members of the Committee had soured to the idea of instant racing.
