Instant Racing The Newest Form Of Gambling In Birmingham
The state of Alabama is trying much like other states to find ways to enhance their
gambling
options. They are looking for revenue dollars that can be used to help with the state budget.
On Thursday, a step was taken towards that goal. The Birmingham Racing Commission approved the use of a game called Instant Racing. It will be used at the Birmingham Race Course.
"We need a new product that will bring people back to the track. It's not a matter that folks don't enjoy it, it's just having something new and fresh because there are too many other opportunities to go elsewhere and enjoy gaming," said Monty Ballard, the Race Course spokesman.
The way the game works is a gambler picks a horse from an old race. The bettor does not know which race or which horse they have chosen. Once the selection is made, the old horse race is shown and the player finds out if they won.
The new game passed the Commission by a 3-1 vote. The one person who voted against the game claimed that this is simply another form of gambling.
The Attorney General in the state of Alabama, however, disagreed, claiming the game game had a bit of skill involved and it was not just luck.
