At this point in the game, online gamblers are looking for anything that will allow them to openly play poker from the comfort of their own home. That is why many players have gotten behind the efforts of Senator Harry Reid as he tries to end online gambling prohibition in the US.

The bill that Reid has drafted is anything but perfect for the players themselves. If approved, the players would likely be shut out of all online poker rooms for a period of at least fifteen months. Despite the layoff, gamblers are just happy that a lawmaker is finally taking the issue seriously.

Opponents of the online poker legislation have pointed out that Reid may simply be paying back Las Vegas gaming executives that stood behind him in the recent mid-term elections. The complaints are valid, with the bill being heavily drafted to benefit the Las Vegas and Atlantic City gaming industries first.

Whatever the reason for Reid's bill, the truth for online gamblers is that it is as close to Internet gaming freedom than they have been since the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was created in 2006. The effort alone has put Reid in a place of rare air among gamblers.

"I know he (Senator Reid) is only pushing this bill to help his own state," said online poker player Mark Bannor. "But it doesn't matter to me. All politicians have an agenda, and it just so happens Reid's agenda will help us finally get the government to protect us instead of making us feel like criminals."

The likelihood of Reid's legislation actually passing is slim. Republican leaders have already blasted the bill, and several have gone on record as saying there is no chance it will survive. Reid is just one of many lawmakers that are trying to attach amendments to the tax cuts bill that is forthcoming in Congress.

If Reid succeeds, there would be little Republicans could do in the way of protect. Back in 2006, the UIGEA was created by adding the bill to a must-pass port security bill in the lame-duck session.
