Internet Gambling Ban Awoke Many American Voters, Says Frank
Barney Frank explained in an interview that he initiated his new bill because he realized, along with many others in Congress, that there were many unhappy voters out there who like to gamble over the Internet.
"My colleagues have discovered that there are a lot of our fellow citizens who like to gamble over the Internet and they are very angry," Frank explained, "they used to be watching Texas Hold'em poker instead of CSPAN and now they are watching CSPAN and they are angry at the people who did this."
In the interview he made it clear that he and other congressmen understand that there is a large portion of the population who never voted before, who were awakened, who now will vote specifically against the people who supported the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
A representative from Casino Gambling Web spoke with an aid to Congressman Frank and he told us that the petition we are sponsoring was exactly the type of thing Congressman Frank needs to present to congress to back up his point that the general public is interested in this subject. The aid also said that the amount of signatures would have to be large for it to have an effect.
Frank also explained in the interview that "a number of my colleagues do not think it is any of our business to tell adults whether or not to play Internet poker." He went on to explain that his bill is strictly libertarian motivated. He simply believes it is none of the government's business to dictate what adults should be allowed to do in the safety of their own home when their actions have no harmful effects on anyone else.
When asked about the ability to allow underage people into the gambling world he responded, "We allow people to buy wine and other products over the Internet... There are ways to deter young people from gambling over the Internet."
When asked about the fact that the anti-gambling bill was passed so overwhelmingly last year he responded by saying the bill was not really paid much attention to, however, he believes that all will change once congress realizes how important this is to a great deal of American people.
Frank acknowledged that his bill is a long shot, but he believes he has found a solid starting point to begin raising awareness about the subject.
