Internet Gambling Bill Voters Pressured By Rep. Spencer Bachus
Representative Barney Frank has a strong grasp on the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. If he thought there would be any chance to enforce the Bill, he might reconsider his current position.
No evidence exists, however, that shows that the Bill can be enforced, so Frank has taken the logical approach. He drew up a Bill that would reverse the ill placed online gambling Bill, and regulate an industry that currently exists.
The Bill from Frank was expected to pass in the House, but a surprising split vote caused the Bill to be defeated. It was thought that some republicans were going to cross party lines and vote for the barney Bill.
That did not happen because of what many close to the situation believe to be the persuasion efforts of Rep. Spencer Bachus. A lobbyist who did not wish to be identified claims that Bachus took the vote, "extremely personally."
Although Bachas organized the failure of the Frank Bill, Frank still believes it is only a matter of time before Legislators make the move to regulate a billion dollar industry. Former Senator Alfonse D'Amato echoed the sentiments of most when speaking about Bachus.
"Unfortunately, some members felt pressured by him....," said D'Amato. He also believes that regulation is right around the corner, "That's the best vote we've had so far on this issue, and I think it's a harbinger of good things to come," he said.
