Internet Gambling Domain Name Ruling Due Thursday In Kentucky
The state of Kentucky shocked the nation a couple of weeks ago when they tried to seize the names of over 140 online gaming sites. Lawyers for the sites and the state have presented their cases last week to Judge Thomas Wingate.
The ruling was expected to be given on Wednesday, but thanks to a computer glitch, the judge will be issuing his ruling in the early afternoon on Thursday. With one more day before the ruling, the online gaming community is eagerly awaiting the decision.
141 online gambling domain names are being sought by the state. If they win the right to seize the names, they will be able to shut down the sites. Lawyers for the sites claim that the names are not "devices" and should not be allowed to be seized.
Governor Steve Beshear is actually in favor of expanding the gambling laws in his state. He wants the money to go to the state, however, and not to private companies on the Internet.
He claims that revenue from the state's gambling options are suffering thanks to these online sites. A couple of weeks ago he attempted to seize the names of some of the more popular gambling websites in the world.
Many of the sites have already began the process of changing their domain names, others have simply blocked Kentuckians from being able to access their sites. Judge Wingate has heard the arguments and his decision will come Thursday.
