Jefferson County Police Continue Raids On Illegal Gambling Rooms
Raids on illegal gambling operations have become commonplace across the United States. In Jefferson County, authorities have made it very clear that anyone who is running these illegal gambling rooms is going to get busted.
Another illegal gambling operation was raided by police on Wednesday afternoon. This time, the location for the illegal operation was the Nederland Internet Cafe.
While neighbors believed the cafe would be a good thing for the community, it has not turned out that way. "We thought it was going to be a real cafe with soups and salads and sandwiches, so we were looking forward to it being here," said Shannon Rogers, owner of Jaguar Salon and Day Spa next to the cafe.
Patrons inside the cafe at the time of the raid were all photographed and checked for any warrants. All of the people were clean and were released without any tickets or arrests.
Mukhtiar Khuwaja and Azim Amirali Sumar were not as lucky. They were both arrested and charged with gambling promotion, and keeping a gambling place. Both of the charges are misdemeanors, and the two men were out on bond by late Wednesday.
The way the gambling took place was through cards that were loaded with money,. If the player won, they would simply turn in the card and receive the money that was left on them when they were finished gambling.
As for the raids, Jefferson County Deputy Chief Ron Hobbs warned that this is not the last of the raids. "If we keep doing this, they're going to figure out it's illegal. So we'll keep coming back until they quit," he said.
