Judy Baar Topinka Opens Illinois Gambling Discussion
Illinois Republican governor candidate Judy Baar Topinka refused to denounce new gambling casinos and slot machines betting, causing some to doubt her previous statements concerning her opposition to expansion of legalized wagering.
In a recent interview, "I'd have to see what the legislature sent me," Topinka said when asked if she would veto a gambling package that included new casinos for Waukegan and the south suburbs of Chicago.
The comments came one day after Topinka announced a 4-year budget plan with a deal to give a casino to Chicago and allowing existing riverboat casinos to greatly expand. Topinka argues she doesn't favor an expansion of gambling because Chicago would use the state's last dormant gaming license and there already is gambling on the other nine riverboats.
According to top political analysts covering the governor's race in Illinois, Judy Baar Topinka is still considered an underdog in the upcoming November elections for governor.
