Harry Kakavas was attempting to make an example out of Crown Casino. Instead, the Supreme Court made an example out of the millionaire by rejecting his bid to collect $35 million he lost at the casino.
Kakavas claims that Crown took advantage of his diagnosed pathological gambling problem. He took the case to court, hoping to recover $35 million that he lost at the baccarat tables at Crown. The losses occurred during an eighteen month gambling spree.
Justice David Harper, however, dismissed the civil suit on Monday. The judge admitted to Crown being careless, but stopped short of making them responsible for Kakavas' gambling losses.
"The fact that Crown was seriously careless does not, however, constitute a basis for any of the claims made by Mr. Kakavas," said Harper. The situation became a lot worse for Kakavas a few minutes later.
Harper ordered Kakavas to repay a $1 million outstanding gambling debt that he owes to Crown Casino. The casino is owned by James Packer. The result of today's court ruling brings to an end what was a rocky relationship between Kakavas and Crown.
The gambler claims that Crown executives lured him to the casino even after knowing that he had a gambling problem. He said that they sent private planes for him and also showered him with cash gifts in order to keep him playing on the tables.
