Kansas Senate Approves New Gambling Legislation
In a very close vote, the Kansas Senate approved a new gambling bill 21-19, just 3 days after the Kansas House of Representatives voted 64-58 in favor as well.
The new bill will allow Kansas to expand gambling at pari-mutuel (dog or horsetrack) venues. Supporters of the new gambling legislation believe the state could see $200 million a year in additional tax revenues, while opponents predict more bankrupticies, gambling addictions, and broken households.
Governor of Kansas, Kathleen Sebelius is expected to sign the bill, something she has called a "historic event".
Supporters of the bill say Kansans are already betting across the state. There's the lottery, 4 indian tribe casinos, and near the state line in Oklahoma, wagering on dog and horse-races plus nearby casinos in Kansas City.
The measure calls for large, tourist-attracting hotel-and-casino complexes in 4 areas, including in or near Dodge City and the Kansas City area. The state would receive 22% of their revenues.
