Kentucky Lawmakers Continue To Disagree On Gambling Expansion

There are many Republicans in the state of Kentucky that do not want gambling expansion at state race tracks. On Tuesday, two of these Republican leaders vowed to file amendments that would make it more difficult to bring slot gambling to the tracks.

Upon hearing the details of the two amendments, Democratic leaders quickly voiced their opposition. Senate Minority Leader Ed Worley even pronounced the amendment from Senator Damon Thayer as, "dead on arrival."

Worley is proposing that the public decide on whether or not to allow video gambling terminals at state race tracks. Senate President David Williams proposed banning gambling expansion without a constitutional amendment. That would also require a vote from the public.

Governor Steve Beshear blasted both proposals, claiming that they were politically motivated. Beshear, who wants expanded gambling in Kentucky, knows all about politically motivated tactics when it comes to the gambling issue.

Last year, Beshear and the state of Kentucky attempted to seize the domain names of 141 online gambling sites. He claimed that the sites were taking business away from Kentucky's gambling establishments. Tomorrow, a hearing will begin on the legality of those seizures.

An appeals court in the state has already ruled that the state had no legal authority to seize the domain names. On Thursday, the Kentucky Supreme Court will begin hearing the case. Beshear has been angling all along to help the struggling Kentucky horse racing industry.
