Kentucky Supreme Court Ruling For Internet Case May Come In March
While Kentucky lawmakers debate expanded gambling at state racetracks, there still is a case pending before the Kentucky Supreme Court. The ruling on the Internet gambling domain name case was expected this past Thursday.
That date came and went, however, without a ruling from the Supreme Court. Now, according to Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association Chairman Joe Brennan, a decision may not come in the case until late March.
Governor Steve Beshear attempted to seize the domain names of 141 online gambling websites last year. His attempt was overturned by an Appeals Court late in the year, and the governor immediately took the case to the Supreme Court.
"Everyone was surprised in Kentucky. The rumor mill thought the decision was going to be rendered," said Brennan, to Poker News Daily, "That could have been why their attorneys acted so quickly at the end of December, so if they got an adverse decision, they could keep it alive."
March 18th now becomes a key date in the case. That is the next day that the Supreme Court in Kentucky will hand down decisions on cases. If the opinion does not comes down in March, there are dates scheduled for April, May, June, and August.
In the meantime, Kentucky lawmakers have turned away a proposed Bill that would have added slots to state racetracks. The tracks have been in financial trouble for several years, and some lawmakers, including Governor Beshear, are pushing for slots to help the tracks gain financial stability.
