Lake County Becomes Latest To Ban Video Gambling In Illinois
Online gambling is coming to the state of Illinois, possibly as early as Wednesday. Video gambling, however, is not being received well by individual counties around the state.
On Tuesday, a major hurdle was cleared for online gambling in Illinois, and at the same time, video gambling was being banned in another county. Lake County became the latest is a string of areas that have now banned the video gambling machines.
The government in Illinois has approved the video gambling machines for the state. They did, however, leave a grace period in the new law for cities and towns to ban the machines. So far, many of these jurisdictions have opted to keep the video gambling machines out.
"I don't think it is responsible government," said Board Member Linda Pedersen, who voted for the video gambling ban, "We know how not to spend money we don't have."
The statement was in reference to the Video Gaming Act. The law was put in place to help fund a $31 billion public works program. The revenue generated from the gaming machines would slash the cost of the project, but many areas in the state are not buying the plan.
There seems to be a common idea among those who have voted against the machines that government has not yet addressed how these machines would be regulated. One thing is certain, with the divide great among Illinois cities in regards to video gambling, residents who want to gamble may have to cross city lines.
