The Arundel Mills mall may soon have a partner that can bring a lot of business into the area. The Anne Arundel County Council has a vote planned soon, that, if approved, would bring the largest slot casino to the state of Maryland.
The developer of the proposed project is Baltimore-based Cordish Company. The company has been seeking a state license to open a casino for quite some time, and on Monday they may gain the license they have been seeking.
Of course, the vote does not come without some controversy. Anti-gambling groups are arguing that the casino would create too much congestion near the mall. They also point to the social ills that have been associated with increased gambling.
Despite the anti-gambling objections, the council appears ready to vote in favor of the casino project. The project needs four of the seven council members to vote in favor in order for the project to proceed.
One of the interesting factors in the vote is that a new council member needs to be chosen before the vote. All of the candidates for that council position, however, are in support of the casino project. That will make it easier for Cordish to accomplish its goal.
Maryland is joining many other states in their efforts to expand gambling. Casinos have become a popular source of revenue for states who are battling to bridge budget gaps. East Coast states, in particular, have pushed their gambling expansion in recent months.
