The Palms has made itself into one of the premiere entertainment and gambling destinations in Las Vegas. That makes it attractive for high rollers and professional athletes, but there are rules in place that ensure that these athletes do not play for free.

This week, former NFL player Ross Verba found out the hard way that the resort means business when it comes to their gambling debts. Verba has been arrested on suspicion of failing to pay a debt of $26,000 to the Las Vegas resort.

This is not the first time that Verba has been arrested for failing to pay markers at a Las Vegas casino. In 2007, Verba was arrested for not paying markers totaling $50,000 at the Wynn Las Vegas.

"These athletes think they have the world by the strings and they sometimes act accordingly at casinos," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, referring to the recent string of arrests of former athletes for failing to pay debts at Las Vegas casinos, "Eventually, these players learn that the casinos are not giving them a free ride."

Verba was a former potential superstar and a number one pick of the Green Bay Packers back in 1997. Verba played eight years in the NFL for the team that drafted him and the Cleveland Browns. In 2006, Verba tried to revive his career by signing with the Detroit Lions.

The most famous of all the sports figures that had a problem with gambling markers in Las Vegas was ex-NBA player Charles Barkley. he had run up several debts, but eventually made arrangements to pay off his markers.
