While Iowa has many casinos, lawmakers are not moving towards expanding gambling in taverns. Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal drove home that point during a taping of the "Iowa Press."
There has been growing support to place video gambling machines in Iowa taverns. Proponents believe that the revenue that would be generated outweighs any of the potential dangers. The Iowa state budget is in need of a boost.
Gronstal, however, claims that lawmakers went to great lengths in 2006 to eliminate the lottery's TouchPlay machines, and does not see a reason to go backwards. There were over 3,000 machines in use at the time they were banned.
"A couple of year's later we're going to go reverse that and go back?" asked Gronstal, as reported by The associated Press, "I think that's unlikely."
The tavern debate comes at a time when Iowa is considering their next gambling expansion move. Late this past week, four developers met a deadline to show they had funding for new casinos.
The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission will now consider all of the proposals and start making decisions about which developers will receive new licenses. Currently, there are seventeen casinos operating in Iowa.
