INDIANAPOLIS ? With the threat of criminal prosecution looming and a federal court ruling critical of the organization?s conduct, the commander of American Legion Post 330 in New Haven said Monday that his group is ?out of the Cherry Master business. ?Irv Arnold acknowledged the continued illegal gambling that resulted in a second state raid of the New Haven post May 18, saying it was financially necessary to stay in business. ?We screwed up,? he said, noting that the Cherry Masters gambling is over, ?until there is a state law that says otherwise. ?Cherry Masters are illegal gambling machines that had become increasingly popular in Indiana Legions, bars and other businesses. But under Gov. Mitch Daniels, Indiana State Excise Police have stepped up enforcement against businesses with liquor licenses ? including the New Haven Legion post ? but have no jurisdiction outside that realm. Last June, the excise police conducted a raid at the post, finding 12 Cherry Master machines used for illegal gambling. The police seized cash and the motherboards from the machines.
