Licensed Online Gambling Companies OK Under Frank Plan
PartyGaming and 888.com are just a couple of the licensed and regulated online gambling companies that had to pull out of the US market after the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was put in place back in late 2006.
Representative Barney Frank is set to finally unveil his long anticipated legislation to overturn the UIGEA. The plan will call for licensed and regulated companies, such as PartyGaming and 888.com to be exempt from the 2006 law.
The goal of Frank is to produce legislation that, "will enable Americans to bet online and put an end to an inappropriate interference with their personal freedom." Frank said in a statement that his legislation would be coming on Wednesday.
Frank has been opposed to the UIGEA from the very beginning of its existence. he has previously attempted to have the law overturned, but was unsuccessful with a Republican dominated Congress.
Now, the Democrats control the Congress and although the path may be easier for Frank, it is still unknown how the new administration will handle the online gambling issue. President Barack Obama is an admitted poker player, and has said that he wants to keep Internet freedom for all people in the US.
Republicans are expected to still oppose any effort to overturn the UIGEA. Whether they will have enough support to stop the legislation from Democratic lawmakers is not yet known.
