Macau Casino Gambling Regulations Being Tightened By China
Macau has become the gambling capital of the world, nobody can dispute that. What can be disputed, however, is the social impact that the casino industry is having on Macau.
The Chinese government worries that there is a negative impact being felt in Macau because of the casino gambling industry. They have decided that the time has come to tighten regulations on the construction of new casinos in Macau.
The fear is that the casinos are hurting Macau's economy and social infrastructure. Business owners in Macau are seeing the problem with the casinos.
"Even if I advertise a job opening, young people in Macau would rather work at casinos. The starting salary there is 14,000 patacas, double the amount we pay. I can't do anything about it," said a 48 year old man who owns a restaurant in downtown Macau.
He has been forced to hire Chinese employees who came to Macau as tourists and remained there illegally. It is the only way he can keep his business open, he claims.
The government, in addition to the stronger regulations, is also trying to keep Chinese nationals from going to Macau. That will be a difficult task that even the government is concerned could be tough to enforce.
Over 15 million Chinese have visited Macau in 2007. That is over half of all the tourists that came into Macau last year.
