Macon County Sheriff's Race Over Gambling
Let the mudslinging begin. The race for sheriff in Macon County is getting ugly. And it's not over an issue you would normally associate with a sheriff's race. It's not crime, but gambling at the heart of the campaign.
New political ads hit the airwaves this week, which claim Sheriff David Warren isn't doing enough to bring new electronic bingo halls to the county. The ads are paid for by the Macon County Citizens for Progress. The political group claims new electronic gaming centers would provide revenue to charities and government agencies in Macon County, which is in desperate need of new economic development. The group's chairman, Tony Haygood, points to Tunica, Mississippi as an example of what could happen in Macon County.
"With our location along Interstate 85, this is a prime opportunity to draw customers, tourists, and more travel to Macon County," Haygood said.
