Representatives in the state of Maine have been considering placing a competing ballot question on the ballot in November to go against the Oxford casino question. Instead, the House decided late this week to scrap that legislation.
Maine is one of the Northeastern states that has been pushing expanding their casino gambling industry. Casinos have become a popular source of revenue to help states through the difficult economic times caused by the recession.
Proponents of an Oxford casino have collected the necessary signatures required to place the question on the ballot in November. If approved, a casino in Oxford would be developed. Lawmakers, however, wanted more expansion.
The Passamaquoddy Tribe has been pushing legislators for years to allow the tribe to build a casino. Year after year, the tribe's efforts have fallen on deaf ears. This year, lawmakers considered adding a ballot question that would have approved an Oxford casino, and a casino for the Passamaquoddy Tribe.
Hollywood Slots in Bankor was also part of the plan that was circulating this week in the House. Hollywood Slots would have received the rights to table games if the additional ballot question was approved.
Maine is a little behind other states in the Northeast when it comes to gambling expansion. Delaware has added sports betting to their gambling options, and Pennsylvania lawmakers have legalized table games earlier this year.
