Maine Voters Will Again Vote On Casino Proposal

Maine voters may be feeling like the voters of Ohio these days. In a similar situation to the one that just took place in Ohio, Maine voters may again be asked to make a decision on casino gambling next November.

In Ohio, voters had continuously turned away gambling proposals over the past couple of decades. Last Tuesday, however, voters approved a ballot initiative that calls for casinos to be built in four major cities, Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Toledo.

For Maine voters, they may get their chance again next November after a group, Black Bear Entertainment, collected almost 100,000 signatures for a ballot initiative. If 55,000 or more of those signatures are certified, the casino proposal would make it to the ballot in November of 2010.

The new casino proposal is different from the one that Maine voters turned away just last year. The group offering the casino proposal believes that it is more attractive to voters than the one they were presented with last year.

"Our bill calls for a limit on slot machines of 1,500, where there were no limits on the past referendum," said Peter Martin of Black Bear Entertainment, "It does not call for the gambling age to be reduced, that stays the same, and it will have a full array of table games, from blackjack to poker, what you would expect in a full casino."

Maine is just the latest in a string of states that is considering casino gambling expansion. Already, many states have legalized casinos, and states that already had casinos have expanded their gaming options.
