Major Sports Gambling Ring Busted In Philadelphia
Police have been in an ongoing battle with illegal gambling operators. The operators continue to run their operations, and the police continue to crack down on the illegal operations.
Wednesday evening in Philadelphia, police made one of their biggest busts to date. A sports gambling ring was busted, and the belief is that it was a high tech operation.
Nine men were arrested on Wednesday and two to three more were expected to be arrested. The operation was worth over $2.5 million, according to police. The place that was raided was equipped with plenty of gambling software.
Nineteen computers were taken from the establishment. Records on printouts were also taken. The computers were turned over to the Department of Justice Computer Forensic Lab to be analyzed for gambling data.
The men that were arrested were between the ages of twenty three and forty eight. They face misdemeanor charges that will probably land them on probation. One of the men was also charged with possessing a controlled substance.
Police are investigating whether the mafia was involved in the operation. Asked about whether the operation had ties to the mob, Lt. Charles Green said, "We have a strong feeling. You're not running a large operation like this without edging off to somebody."
