Maryland Senate Paves Way For Table Game Gambling At Racetrack
For days there has been debate over whether or not to give voters in Maryland the right to approve table games at a Prince George racetrack. On Wednesday, the Maryland Senate approved a bill calling for voter input.
The bill, which was proposed by Senator C. Anthony Muse, was approved in the Senate by a thirty-four to thirteen count. It now will move on to the House where it will face tough opposition.
House Speaker Michael E. Busch does not believe that this is the time for table games in the state. Maryland is currently dealing with slot expansion, and the House Speaker feels that one issue should be tackled and perfected before moving on to table game expansion.
Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington is the track that would benefit if the bill passed the House and voters approved the new forms of gambling. Like in other states, the racing industry is struggling mightily in Maryland.
Kentucky lawmakers have attempted to introduce similar proposals to help its ailing racing industry, but legislators have been unable to come to terms on what type of expansion is necessary.
Maryland must move quickly if they are going to keep up with other states in the Northeast. Pennsylvania lawmakers have already legalized table games, and other states are considering doing the same.
The casino industry competition is becoming fierce on the East Coast. Delaware legalized sports gambling last year, and New Jersey lawmakers are discussing the idea of bringing sports books to Atlantic City.
