Maryland Senate President Wants More Slot Gambling
Maryland lawmakers have been debating the expanded gambling issue for months, and it does not look as though the discussions are going to slow down anytime soon. Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller spurred the debate once again this week.
Miller represents the Prince George's County where the Rosecroft Raceway is located. He believes that the addition of slots could be the only way that the racetrack could be saved from financial ruin, but he has opposition on the issue.
"Well that may be the Senate president's idea and he has a right to his idea, but in order for that to happen the legislature will have to vote on it...and I don't support it," said Senator Nathaniel Exum, as reported by The Examiner.
The gambling issue is not new to voters in the state of Maryland. As recently as 2008, voters approved slot expansion for five different locations. Another proposal to bring slots to Rosecroft was unsuccessful last year.
Maryland is an an awkward position when it comes to gambling expansion. Although they have recently expanded, other states in the Northeast are staying one step ahead of Maryland.
In Pennsylvania, lawmakers just finalized legislation that will legalize table games at casinos in the state. Once the table games arrive, Pennsylvania will have the ammunition to battle New Jersey to become the top gaming destination in the Northeast.
